Open management

Open leadership involves regular exchanges of information between leaders and subordinates. Problems and tactics are discussed openly, and everybody is invited to make suggestions. Open leadership favors the creation of a positive, motivational atmosphere in the workplace: staff feel that they are part of the decision process and that their opinions are valued. Leaders also benefit: they can keep a finger on the pulse and learn of potential problems at an early stage. Make sure that you are visible and approachable: staying behind closed doors makes you remote and inaccessible. Be available for discussion and, if you can, facilitate collaboration among subordinates by having open-plan layouts.
