Extrinsic and intrinsic motivation

20. Februar 2008

Your passion for something is an indication of what you find worthy in and of itself. It’s a clue to what find intrinsically rewarding. Researchers in human motivation have long talked about two kinds of motivation- extrinsic and intrinsic. We either do things because of external controls - the possibility of a tangible reward if we succeed or punishment if we don’t - or we do things because of an internal desire. We do something because we feel forced, or we do something because we want to. We do something to please others, or because it pleases us. Which conditions is more likely to produce extraordinary results?
